1. NOUN: a word that
names a person, animal, place, thing, idea, concept, or anything considered as
noun.
~ The functions of
noun in the sentences:
1. Subject of the sentence.
2. Predicate noun (also predicate
nominative or subjective complement)
3. Appositive (noun in apposition)
4. Direct and indirect object of a
verb.
5. Object of the preposition
6. Object complement
Gerunds can also be
classified as noun.
Ex: I like writting.
The word “writting”
is a gerund.
2. NOUN PHRASES: a group word that
does the work of a noun. A noun phrases is either a pronoun or any group of
words that can be replaced by a pronoun.
· Structures of Noun
Phrases:
1. Noun Pre-modifiers: modifiers
before the noun are called pre-modifiers. All the pre modifiers that are
present and the noun together from a noun phrases.
2. Noun Post-modifiers: modifiers
coming after a noun are called post-modifiers.
Formula of Noun
Phrase:
1. Pre-modifiers + noun
Ex: A new computer (here “a new” is pre modifiers and “computer”
is a noun)

Noun + Post-modifiers
Ex: Book on the table (here “book”
is a noun and “on the table” is post-modifiers)
3. Pre-modifier + noun +
Post-modifier
Ex: The blue is car very cute.
(here “the blue” is pre-modifiers, “car”is a noun, and “is very cute” is
post-modifiers).
